Demystifying Resolution

In this section you can see the different ways that light and color are expressed on a LED sign.

LED signs are made up of modules that contain light-emitting diodes. Like thread count on sheets, the more diodes you have in a module, the finer your image will be. The closer together your diodes are, the smaller the distance, which gives you a lower “pitch.” Pitch is measured in millimeters. Below you can see examples of P3 – 3mm apart up to P20, 20mm apart. We carry a wide variety of pitches to ensure you have the right resolution for YOUR location.

We offer both SMD (Surface Mount Diodes) and DIP (Direct Inline Punch).

SMDs express over a trillion colors with one diode. DIPs also express over a trillion colors, but do so using a cluster of RGB lights. (RGB stands for Red Green Blue) In the photo below you can see the RGB clusters on the P16 and P20 examples.

The pitch your sign will require to perform best is determined by the distance at which your sign will be viewed. Below you can see how the distance between the diodes affects the crispness of the same image on each pitch.
